HOW IT STARTED

WHY ME?

In 2023, filmmaker Jonas Nellissen approached me with an idea that I honestly didn't quite understand at first: he wanted to make a documentary about my journey.

My first thought was: why me? I hadn't qualified for the Olympics. I hadn't won anything major. I was still finding my feet in iQFOIL and figuring out what I was even capable of. I always assumed documentaries were made about athletes who had already made it, not someone still in the middle of trying.

But Jonas saw something worth following.

So he started following me. From training sessions to regattas, from one country to the next, he became a quiet observer of the journey I was living. He travelled with me from competition to competition and captured the parts of professional sport that rarely make it into the results sheet: the preparation, the travelling, the waiting, the frustration, the small breakthroughs and everything that happens in between.

The film follows those three years of my life as the dream slowly became real, all the way to April 2024, when I qualified Switzerland for the Olympic Games. Jonas was there on the coach boat, filming the qualification as it unfolded.

MORE THAN A QUALIFICATION

THE PERSON BEHINDTHE ATHLETE

But The Wind in Her Hands is not simply a film about qualifying for the Olympics.

It is a film about the person behind the athlete.

Alongside the racing and training, the documentary explores the mental side of high-performance sport, the doubts and darker moments that come with pursuing something so uncertain, and the ways I changed as a person along the way. It captures the parts of the journey that are difficult to explain through results alone: the pressure, the setbacks, the self-doubt, the moments of wanting to give up, and the gradual process of learning to trust myself.

BEFORE IT WAS A DREAM

FROM TENERIFETO THE QUALIFICATION

There is also footage from before any of this was a dream. Some of the earliest images in the film were filmed by my mum during my very first windsurfing sessions in Tenerife in 2021. Seeing those images alongside footage from the qualification three years later makes the journey feel almost surreal: from those first tentative sessions on the board to competing for an Olympic qualification.

That is what makes The Wind in Her Hands so special to me.
